Above the incisor teeth locations there is a shallow depression, the incisive fossa, and this gives rise to the depressor alae nasi.

Below the incisive fossa, the alveolar ( tooth cavity ) is attached to a segment of the orbicular oris and a little above and to the side, the nasalis muscle arises.

On either side of the symphysis, just below the incisor teeth, is a depression, the incisive fossa, which gives origin to the mentalis and a small portion of the orbicularis oris.

It is larger and deeper than the comparable incisive fossa, and is separated from it by a vertical ridge, the canine eminence, corresponding to the socket of the canine tooth; the canine fossa gives origin to the levator anguli oris.
